VMware Cloud Director 10.3 Remote Console Common issues and how to resolve it

After upgrading my home lab to VMware Cloud Director 10.3, I started having Remote Console issues. While searching online, it sounds to affect many others and though I will share the two issues I have and how to resolve them.

The first one, I kept getting the following error when trying to access VMware Remote Console “Connection error: could not negotiate SSL.”, as shown below:

VMware Remote Console Connection error could not negotiate SSL

For those who are more of a Web Console users, I just kept getting a disconnected error every time I try to connect using it as shown below.

VMware Cloud Director Web Console Disconnected error

Alright, so now you have the same problem. How to resolve it? It sounds like in the later versions of VMware Cloud Director, it is becoming more restrictive on SSL Certificates and without a signed certificates the Remote Console does not seem to work properly. This was done to enhance security.

As I have found a very well written and detailed a blog post on how to replace your certs with Lets Encrypt Wildcard SSL certificates by Marc Roeleveld, I have decided against writing my own on the subject and point you to his excellent post that can be found at the link below. By the way, it’s worth mentioning that Lets Encrypt certificates are free of charge, and quite easy to get, so no excuse not to install a signed certificate even for your home lab.… Read More

It is not only virtualizable, it is not only Cloud ready, but they even offer it as a hosted service in the Cloud. It is a PBX system that’s Cloud ERA ready.

3cx Phone SystemIf you have not got to read my previous review of 3CX VoIP Phone System, I would highly recommend you check it out at: http://www.virtualizationteam.com/various/pbx-in-the-cloud.html. In my previous post, I have covered how straight forward the installation was and how I got things running in my lab in no time, and the vast amount of features this simple PBX is offering. Now, as they have released V14 of their VoIP Phone System, 3CX has added tons of valuable features highlighted below:

  • Integrated Virtual PBX Server option
  • Completely redesigned Android client, it is a much slicker and seemed to be snappier on my Samsung Galaxy S5.
  • New iPhone client with integrated tunnel, I could not verify this as I don’t have an iPhone, but I am sure it will be appreciated by the Apple fans.

Configure VBuzzer as a VOIP Provider in 3CX Phone System

After creating my previous post PBX in the Cloud, there was a small detail that grabbed a surprising attention from the community. I have mentioned that I have setup VBuzzer as a VOIP Provider in 3CX Phone System, and the only reason I did that was it was I had a  readily available VBuzzer account, but there seems a good amount of users interested in how I got VBuzzer to work as a VOIP Provider in 3CX, as it was one of the none out of the box providers and as I got the question from few different readers, I thought I will document how I have done it.

1- Make sure the following ports are forwarded in your firewall to your 3CX Phone System:

9000 – 9099

2- Using the ADD VOIP Provider Wizard, choose ‘Generic’ from the Country drop down menu and ‘Generic VOIP Provider’ from the Provider drop down menu. Click Next.

3CX add VBuzzer as a VOIP Provider

3- Configure the VOIP Provider general tab as in the below screenshot.

3CX VBuzzer SIP Configuration

– Extension Number: is the phone number assigned to you by VBuzzer

– Authenication ID: is your VBuzzer username

– Authenication Password: is your VBuzzer user account password

– The rest of the field fill them exactly the same as in the above image.… Read More

PBX in the Cloud

Most companies today have one sort of PBX or another. It no longer makes sense to buy a phone line from the telecom for each employee. This over time has made PBX a very attractive solution from a cost perspective and companies have rushed to adapt it. Unfortunately, it does not take long after a traditional PBX solution is installed for the business to notice the amount of required specialized equipment and skills they need to maintain it. Actually after a few years, most PBX systems seem to get out of hand with how many wires are running loose with no one figuring out which user it belongs to. Further, simple features like voicemail, call forwarding, and call conferencing might require you to change your full PBX system or require additional expensive systems.

When VOIP PBX systems came out, they seemed like the knights in shining armour who will be saving the day for business owners. It sounded like a very appealing alternative, as it uses the same network infrastructure the company has already invested in, and provides tons of features that were never possible with a traditional PBX. Further, large VOIP PBX players made it look very easy to setup and maintain.… Read More

Software Defined PBX

I remember the days when I used to live in an apartment building and when my analog home phone used to stop working due to a line problem, the first thing we used to suspect is one of my neighbor has missed up our building PBX wiring while fixing his phone line or installing a new phone line (more than likely, they did not mean to). I used to call the building maintenance and walk down with them to the PBX box and the fun begin when you try to identify which cable is my home phone line.

As that PBX grid grew, that wires spaghetti got out of hand. It got to a stage where it was almost impossible to add new lines or fix old ones without disturbing someone else phone line. The sad part, this PBX fun is not limited to old apartment buildings but many enterprises still depend on it.  If one of the below images remind you of how painful this sometime get, then keep reading as the solution might be Virtualization Again! And might be cheaper than you always thought.

PBX very hard to manageOld PBX System

As many companies has over grown their PBX system to unmanageable state, VoIP seems to be the natural choice to replace that old hard to manage PBX till companies look at the cost of switching to VoIP and complexity of traditional VoIP solutions they shy away and stick with what they have.… Read More

VMworld 2012 Top Announcements

Every VMworld so far has carried out an over whelming number of innovative announcements that hit us over a short period of few days, & this VMworld is no exception. In this post, I have decided to summarize the top announcement made at VMworld 2012. I will start by pointing the ones announced today, & will add to them if I find more announcement to make it to my top announcements list. I believe just the ones announced today will be a total game changer and will leave us with a lot to play with till the next VMwolrd and maybe beyond that. That have been said, let’s look at some of these great announcements:

vSphere Related Announcements:

vSphere 5.1 is here with many enhancement and new features. For the full list of enhancement and features of vSphere 5.1, you might want to check out: https://www.vmware.com/files/pdf/products/vsphere/vmware-what-is-new-vsphere51.pdf

vSphere Enhanced VMotion: Share Storage was always one of the requirements to run VMotion. I can see many customers looking forward to this, specially smaller customers who could not afford a shared storage.… Read More
