Cisco TelePresence – On-Stage Holographic Video Conferencing

I know reading the title you wonder what does this has to do with Virtualizaiton, but if you look deep into it you will find out that some one has figured out how to virtualize human :) . For example you have one instructur & he can do lecture in 20 different countries which is 100s maybe 1000s of miles away at the same time. Ah wow that can save a lot of travel cost & man power cost used for training. The same concept can be used for many other purposes, which get you to use 1 person to do 20 people job. Does not that sound like server virtualization when it started out!! To find out more about TelePresence & what I like to call Human virtualizaiton please look at the few videos below:

Vizioncore VRanger (Previously ESXRanger) Quiescing & VSS Recommended Settings:

I have been always hit by customers who have a problem taking an image backup of virtual machines that run a database application. Another repeated question is “when & when not to use Quiescing & VSS with VCB & vRanger”. For that I have decided to write this set of posts hoping to answer these questions. The answer will have the instruction of how to do this as step by step for Vizioncore vRanger, which is a great & easy backup software for VMware, but the explanation apply for any other image level backup software used with VMware, though you will have to adapt the instructions to the backup tool of your choice.

VMware View manager problem when entering domain administrator for the View Composer setting

While trying to add the domain administrator to my VMware View Composer settings in VMware View Manager, I was getting the following errors repeatedly:

Wrong Domain

Bad user name or Password

I have found out that the problem was caused by my Virtual Center where VMware View Composer reside was not a part of the domain, and was not using my domain controller as a DNS resolver. To resolve this problem I had came up with two solution:

1- Use your domain controller DNS as the DNS resolver on your VMware vCenter / VMware View Composer Server if possible.

2- On the View Composer server, add the domain name to the domain controller’s IP address mapping in the Windows hosts file: %WINDIR%\system32\drivers\etc\hosts.

For example:
111.345.333.235 <domain name>
:
Please note this is seems to be a well known issue. A VMware KB with the second solution I provided can be found here: http://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/viewContent.do?externalId=1007837&sliceId=2
:
Though the KB did not mention the first solution I mentioned above, it is 100% workable & supported.
If this saved you some headache and time, please take the time to share your experience with us. Thanks.

VMWARE ESXi – Host in HA Cluster must have userworld swap enabled

I had always been using the VMware ESX version in my implementation. As I noticed that VMware seems to be pushing toward the move to ESXi, I had decided to try the latest version for a full scale installation. Though when I was trying to configure HA for my VMware ESXi Cluster, I had been hit with the below error:

HA agent has an error : Host in HA Cluster must have userworld swap enabled

VMware ESXi HA Error

Luckily the VMware support was quite helpfull as the usual and gave me the simple solution for the problem in less than a minute, I was back up and running with HA configured. So I decided to share the solution with you. Read below the steps for the solution:
